The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team hosted Waseca Saturday night in a Section 1A matchup as the end of the regular season draws closer.
Despite taking a 4-3 lead in the third period, the Tigers allowed two Bluejays goals in the final five minutes to drop the game 5-4.
The Bluejays were first on the board and the only team to score in the opening period. The goal came with just over nine and a half minutes remaining.
It did not take long for the Tigers to even up the score in the second period. Just 45 seconds in, senior Culley Larson found the back of the net off an assist from junior Logan Hacker. Junior Sam Witham gave the Tigers the lead six minutes later with a goal assisted by senior Danny Chalmers.
Waseca tied the game just three minutes later, however, with a goal in the ninth minute. Not even a minute later, Waseca took the lead back and went into the final break up 3-2.
The Tigers scored back-to-back goals in the sixth and eighth minutes of the third period to once again regain the lead. The first goal came during a power play from senior Campbell Cichosz on an assist from junior Blake Ulve and Chalmers. The second goal came from Chalmers himself off an assist from Cichosz.
Suddenly, with eight minutes left in the game, the Tigers had the lead.
With 4:41 left in the game, the Bluejays scored the equalizer and, 30 seconds later, the go-ahead goal.
Albert Lea outshot Waseca 60-15 in total shots on goal, but the puck would not find the mark enough to pull out the win.
The Tigers fall to 7-9-1 on the season and will be back on the ice Tuesday night when they travel to Owatonna to take on the 13-4 Huskies.
