The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team hit the road in hopes of continuing its run in the Section 1A tournament against Mankato West on Tuesday night.

While the Tigers entered the third period in a 2-2 tie, the Scarlets used two late-period goals to pull away and eventually beat the Tigers 4-2.

It did not take long for the Tigers to get themselves on the board, as junior Logan Barr scored an unassisted goal in the third minute of play. The Tigers played with the lead for nearly the entire period until the Scarlets tied the game on a power-play goal with just over a minute left in the first.

Mankato West took 12 shots on goal compared to four from Albert Lea. Senior Brad Horecka started in the net for Albert Lea and saved 11 shots.

The Tigers came out in the second period and again to the lead with a power-play goal in the fifth minute from junior Blake Ulve. Barr and senior Danny Chalmers were in with the assist.

The Scarlets again evened the game just two minutes later, where the score would remain through the end of the second period. Junior Dyland Carlson was called for a minor penalty near the end of the period, however, the Scarlets were unable to take advantage of the power-play opportunity.

Both Albert Lea and Mankato West added 10 shots on goal in the second period.

Entering the final period of regulation in a 2-2 tie, both teams battled back and forth with no goals being scored in the first 15 minutes. Then, with 1:50 left on the clock, the Scarlets scored the go-ahead goal. They added another with :19 seconds left to essentially end the game, as well as the Tigers’ season.

The Tigers finish their season in the quarterfinal round of the section tournament and with a 10-15-2 record.

They will lose eight seniors to graduation, including Horecka, Chalmers, Jacob Prihoda, Culley Larson, Owen Zelenak, John Jensen, Marty Syverson and Carson Stadheim.
