After the dust settled at the Section 2A wrestling tournament in Blue Earth over the weekend, both United South Central and NRHEG advanced one wrestler to the state tournament.

For the Panthers, 170-pounder Ralph Roesler was the only wrestler to earn a trip to state. Roesler picked up pinfall victories in both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. In the championship match, Roesler beat Maple River’s Wyatt Simon in a tight 7-5 decision.

Roesler earns the No. 7 seed in the 170-pound bracket at the state tournament. He will take on Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunberg junior Rick Jones in the opening round.

Other top finishers for NRHEG were 120-pounder Nikolas Petsinger and 132-pounder Clay Stenzel, who both came away with third-place finishes. Argo Gushwa at 145 pounds and 152-pounder Thor Routh both came in fourth place.

“I am very proud of every one of our wrestlers this season, we have come a long way,” said head coach Shawn Larson. “I am also elated for Ralph; he has worked very hard for his opportunity.”

For United South Central, 113-pounder Bryce Sonnek notched his second consecutive state tournament bid.

Sonnek won in a third-period fall in the quarterfinal round and in a 6-2 decision in the semifinals. In the championship match, Sonnek took on Blue Earth Area’s Ty Peterson and came out on top of a 5-3 decision.

Sonnek also fell into the No. 7 seed in his 113-pound bracket. He will take on Jackson County Central freshman Logan Buzton in the first round. The pair met once already this season with Buzton winning a close 9-6 decision.

Also finishing in the top four for the Rebels was 106-pounder Byron Getchell and 195-pounder Jacob Billings, who both came in third.

The first round of the Class A tournament is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Friday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
