The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team hosted Red Wing Tuesday night hoping to carry over momentum from a big win over Rochester John Marshall last Thursday.
The Tigers used big performances from several players with four in double figures to down the Wingers for the second time this season, 57-50.
It was a close and relatively low scoring first half for both teams. Albert Lea narrowly edged out Red Wing 22-21 to take a small lead into halftime.
The Tigers came out in the second half and outscored the Wingers 35-29 to earn the seven-point victory.
Seniors Koby Hendrickson and Chay Guen led the Tigers in scoring with 14 points each. Guen also led the Tigers in rebounds with eight and added three assists. Hendrickson tallied six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Seniors Connor Veldman and JJ Mucah-Owens were also in double figures. Veldman recorded 12 points and Mucha-Owens scored 10. Mucha-Owens also had four rebounds and led in assists and steals with five and four, respectively. Veldman added four rebounds and two steals.
Senior Caden Gardner grabbed two rebounds and came away with two steals, senior Andrew Willner scored three points and junior Bhan Kuey scored four points and had two rebounds.
The Tigers move to 11-10 on the season and will be back on the court Thursday when they hit the road to take on the Spartans of Rochester Mayo. The Spartans came away with a 86-71 win in the previous meeting this season.
With just three games remaining in the regular season, the Tigers currently sit as the No. 3 seed in Section 1AAA. If they stay there, they would host the No. 6 seed in the first round of the tournament. The current No. 6 seed is Kasson-Mantorville.
