The city of Albert Lea would like to remind all residents that sump pumps must be directed outside and may not be directed to floor drains or other sewer connections in the basement, according to a press release.

Sump pump water has the potential to overwhelm the sanitary sewer system and therefore must be pumped outside to the lawn or street area. Non-compliant sump pump arrangements are considered illegal sewer connections and are not allowed. Residents were asked to check all sump pumps and make sure they are directed outside, the release stated.
