The Corey Goodnature Memorial Golf Tournament announced the cancellation of its annual tournament due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, but said plans for a possible fall tournament were in the works.

The Corey Goodnature Memorial Scholarship Committee released a statement Tuesday canceling its June 27 tournament.

“Today’s social and economic climate is full of uncertainties,” the committee said in a statement. “With everything our donors are going through right now, we do not feel right asking them to contribute to our cause this year. We feel that your efforts are better utilized focusing on your families, businesses and employees.”

While the June tournament is canceled, the scholarships will still be awarded to this year’s recipients who will receive a combined total of nearly $50,000. In total, over $250,000 in scholarships has been awarded since its inception.

Despite the annual tournament being canceled, the committee is planning to host a smaller event on Sept. 12 at Green Lea Golf Course. While they weren’t sure what the event would look like, they said it would still involve a golf tournament of some kind.

The committee will continue to meet via video conferencing to discuss possibilities for the September event and will post updates on the Corey Goodnature Memorial Scholarship social media pages.

The tournament will return in 2021 with the scheduled date of June 26.

It is in memory of Chief Warrant Officer Three Corey Goodnature, who was killed while performing a rescue mission in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005.
