We were pleased to hear Tuesday during the Freeborn County Board of Commissioners meeting that the county is looking into the possibility of pushing back the property tax deadline for people who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Though the discussions are in the preliminary phases, we think this would be a great help to small businesses, many of which are struggling right now because they are closed or only able to offer limited services.
Property taxes can be a large burden for businesses, and extending the deadline would allow them to focus on things such as payroll, utilities and other pressing costs for the time being to keep the doors to their businesses open.
We continue to encourage the county, city, state and others to make this a priority. This will spread the message that our community continues to support its small businesses.
