Northwestern Freeborn County, northeastern Faribault County and southwestern Waseca County are under a tornado warning through 6 p.m. this evening, according to the National Weather Service.
At 5:15 p.m., a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado with rotation detected on radar was located near Wells, or 16 miles northwest of Albert Lea, moving north at 25 mph.
There’s potential for quarter-sized hazardous hail, the service stated, and flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes could be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows and vehicles will occur, and tree damage is likely.
Those in areas of severe weather are encouraged to move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.
