Every Little Thing by April Jeppson
“Everybody can be great … because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” — Martin Luther King Jr.
People are awesome. Have I mentioned that lately? Don’t get me wrong, I get frustrated, disappointed and sometimes outright angry at what people do. However, I have learned that most people, most of the time, are great.
In my line of work, we are always looking for an extra set of hands. To help coach a youth sport, serve food for a senior luncheon or gather financial support for much-needed building repairs. People are busier today than they’ve ever been, and yet I’m continually impressed by all those who make time to help.
I think it’s a common misconception that people who volunteer don’t have anything else to do. That they would otherwise be bored if they weren’t a part of this club or helping out with that activity. I have discovered that most people who give of their time are actually very busy.
“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” — Elizabeth Andrew
We held another large event at work and were in need of volunteers. People that could help set up tables, decorate, serve food and clean up. We put the word out, hoping to get a few individuals that could lighten our load for at least part of the day. At last count, 14 people stepped up to the challenge. To say our load was lightened is an understatement. They actually lifted us up and made the entire experience run seamlessly.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world: indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” This is accredited to Margaret Mead, anthropologist and humanitarian.
How cool is that? There is so much wrong with the world and yet we should rejoice in realizing how much power we do have. In our community, we can make a difference every day. By helping serve food at a luncheon or by teaching a youth a new skill.
A group of individuals came together for their shared desire to bring an all-inclusive play space to our town. Because of their efforts, amazing things are on the horizon.
“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.” — Unknown
Whatever you think this town lacks, I’m sure there’s an organization looking to fill that need. Nonprofits cannot do all the work alone. We need people who share our vision and are willing to support us. I encourage you to seek out opportunities and “vote,” and together, we can move mountains.
