Lake Mills competed in the Bob Roethler Invitational in Emmetsburg Saturday. The Bulldogs had a good day by placing second out of 17 teams.

Hampton-Dumont-CAL won the title by amassing 222 team points to Lake Mills’ 202.

“This was by far the most teams this tournament has ever had,” said coach Alex Brandenburg. “We competed well overall as a team today.”

Four individuals moved through the front side of their brackets to make the finals. Lucas Oldenkamp won the 106-pound weight class with all pins, and his first one was his 100th career win.

Steve Brandenburg won the 144-pound weight class with a 16-0 technical fall, and Wyatt Hanna won the 215 title with a thrilling overtime victory. Hayden Helgeson was the other finalist but lost a hard fought match to finish second.

“There were several big wins throughout the day by several kids in our line-up,” Brandenburg said. “As with any day, there are some things to improve upon, but I can’t complain with our overall performance.”
