Nose for News by Sarah Stultz
The other night driving home from work I came across an unmistakable smell a few blocks from the office.
We all know it when we smell it: There must have been a skunk nearby.
I tried to be extra attentive as I kept driving, hoping the little white and black critter wouldn’t make an appearance on the road and get struck by my car.
Our dog once got sprayed by a skunk, and I know that the smell can linger, and it’s not fun.
While I never did come across a skunk on my route, the smell lingered for several blocks until it finally faded.
As I continued driving to my house, it made me think of the effect that something so small can have for the good or the bad. Whether we realize it or not, our actions can spread to others, and the impressions that we make on others can linger just like the smell from that skunk.
At this time of year, my heart is touched time and time again as I witness and hear stories of goodwill and kindness to others. I’ve seen the impact that these acts of kindness have had. While the effect of some may have been momentary, the effects of others have been long-lasting, potentially changing the trajectory of people’s lives.
Imagine the impact that can be had on people if this goodwill continued throughout the year.
It reminds me of several instances from the early years of our family when my daughter was young and friends invited us over for the holidays and then continued to take us under their wing throughout the year knowing we didn’t have any family in the area.
Those moments are something I remember to this day and that have had a long-lasting impact on my life.
Though these were friends, I also remember the kindness of strangers and acquaintances.
A week from now, Christmas will be past but the spirit of the season can continue. Be a part of making sure it does.
