Storm brings in bitterly cold Arctic air through Tuesday
A slow-moving snowstorm closed schools Friday around the area and slowed down activity in the community as dangerously cold temperatures moved in and are expected to hang over the area through Tuesday.
Freeborn County was under a winter storm warning through midnight Friday, before turning over to a winter weather advisory. Though snow amounts were trending down as of press time, dangerously cold wind chills are expected between 25 and 40 below zero in the coming days, according to the National Weather Service.
A wind chill advisory is in effect from Saturday evening through Tuesday morning, with the coldest wind chills expected Sunday and Monday mornings.
The weather agency advises people to continue to plan on slippery road conditions, and states patchy, blowing snow could reduce visibility.
Dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes, and people should make sure to use caution while traveling and wear appropriate clothing, a hat and gloves.
If people must travel, they should keep an extra flashlight, food and water in their vehicle in case of an emergency.
