Update: Heavy rain possible through Saturday; flash flood watch issued

Two rounds of heavy rain are likely coming tonight through Saturday that could lead to flooding in the area.

According to the National Weather Service, two heavy rain events are expected — the first starting tonight and going through Friday morning and the second on Friday night.

Heavy rainfall rates are likely to exceed half an inch to one inch per hour from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and from 9 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday.

The weather agency states the greatest threats for severe will come with the second round late Friday afternoon to Friday night. This could lead to significant flash flooding.

According to data from the Albert Lea Wastewater Treatment Plant, Albert Lea has received 5.24 inches of rain so far this month, and in the month of May received 6.47 inches. An average for the month of June is 5.41 inches, according to data since 2008.

Albert Lea so far this year has received 14.26 inches, which is down from the average precipitation of 17 1/2 inches received through this time of year.

The Weather Service states 2 to 4 inches of rain are likely through Saturday with some areas of 5 inches locally possible.
