Albert Lea 4th Ward Councilor Sherri Rasmussen on Monday announced she will resign from her council seat as she prepares to move out of state.
“I am resigning my position because I had an opportunity come up on the West Coast that just is a really great opportunity for my life,” said Rasmussen, who was elected to her position in November 2022.
She said she has enjoyed being able to represent her constituents and appreciates the faith people put in her to serve in the position. She wished the city continued future growth.
Mayor Rich Murray thanked Rasmussen for her service and wished her well in her future endeavors.
City Manager Ian Rigg also thanked Rasmussen for her time on the council and said he appreciated that even when they disagreed, there was always a level of respect between them.
As a councilor, Rasmussen served on the Albert Lea Housing and Redevelopment Authority Board, the Albert Lea Senior Center board and the Board of Zoning Appeals. She also was on an advisory board for SMART Transit, among other responsibilities.
She grew up in Albert Lea and returned to the community in 2021 to care for family.
City Clerk Daphney Maras said the council at its next meeting will declare a vacancy in the position. She said she expects to have more information about how the position will be filled at that time.
