One element missing from the local flood-control plan is a botanic one — planting willow trees. Willow trees are easily capable of drinking as much as 30 or 40 gallons of water per day. (Source: TreePursuits.com)

Of course young trees need several gallons in watering twice a week to get established, and they do not like to sit in water. But I think the city would do well to place some next to the retaining ponds on Main Street, and in other low-lying areas. Homeowners too, should really consider installing a willow if they have problems with standing water after major rain storms.
