Albert Lea Area Schools issued a statement Thursday about a social media post circulating across the nation that included the name of one of the schools in Albert Lea.
School officials said when they learned of the post in question, which referred to a school named Southwest Middle School, they contacted the school resource officers, who investigated.
They discovered that there is a list of underperforming schools in Georgia that is circulating on Snapchat. The “targeted assistance” list included a school named Southwest that was to receive targeted academic supports.
The district stated unfortunately the misinformation led to some people putting this information on social media with the wrong information and context.
“At no point were Albert Lea Schools identified nor in danger,” the district stated. “We will continue to make our students and staff our top priority by ensuring their safety.”
School officials said they appreciate the support of local law enforcement and will partner with them to ensure the safety of students and staff.
