Evelyn (Evy) Jane Hagen was born June 28, 1936, to Jacob and Marie (VanRavenhorst) Alders, twin to Aart Jacobus. On Tuesday, September 17th 2024, she joined her parents Marie [van Ravenhorst] and Jacob Alders, siblings Aart, Art, Pearl and JoAnn and daughter Kimberly in Heaven. She is survived by her immediate family members: sisters Pal and Paulette, son Thomas Michael (’64) and granddaughters Casey (’91) and Katie (’96), but beloved and remembered by all her family far and wide.
Evy grew up in Hollandale and attended high school at Albert Lea High School. After high school, she began a variety of occupations, starting at a mink farm, then a nursing home, and then finally, Evelyn spent most of professional career at Navy Hospital enriching the worklives of many compassionate colleagues, working until the age of 81.
In her personal life, she married Everett Hagen (1930 – 2013) and had Kimberly Sue Hagen (1963-1963) and Thomas Michael (’64). One of the things the family will always remember is Evy / Grandma / Aunt Evy always showing up to a family event with a homemade Cherry pie. This writer doesn’t remember a single holiday where the family dinner wasn’t wrapped up by a Cherry pie with whipped crème topping. She loved baking and cooking of all sorts and loved doing so for her family.
Evy enjoyed birdwatching in her local parks, often pointing out rare birds to whoever was around. One of her favorite birds, the cardinal, came to visit her deck shortly after her passing so her family is comforted by every sighting of the red bird.
On the weekends, Evy could be seen on or near the water, enjoying a wordsearch and reading the Bible. As a devoted Christian, she prayed for others in need, always had a bible story at the ready, and was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite charity in her name, hug your family tight, and enjoy a cherry pie in her honor.
