Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Tommy Kramer will be in Albert Lea Friday night with plans in the works to meet with the boys football team and the public at Albert Lea High School’s first home game of the season.

Kramer, who was selected by the Vikings in the first round of the NFL draft in 1977, played for the Vikings through 1989, before he was signed by the New Orleans Saints in 1990 and then retired at the end of his first season.

He had the nickname “Two-Minute Tommy,” said Dave Klatt, a State Farm insurance agent and Albert Lea school board member, who is sponsoring Kramer’s visit.

Klatt said last year he brought a face painter in for the kids, and he wanted to do something again this year.

His office is full of Vikings autographs, and Klatt said he got to know one of the people who works with several of the former Vikings players and decided to sponsor bringing Kramer to town.

“It all came together quickly,” he said.

Klatt said he is going to try to have Kramer first meet with the boys football team around 5 p.m. before he will be brought back to Jim Gustafson Field to sign autographs and meet with the public in the plaza area of the stadium. Kramer will be under a canopy.

Klatt also plans to give away some gift cards for his other business, Mocha & Mini, at the game.

Kramer is anticipated to arrive in his Vikings limousine.
