  • The Alden-Conger volleyball team defeated Mankato Loyola 3-2. Kasey Knutson had 19 kills, 29 digs and one ace serve in the win.
  • Jackson Goodell took first place for the Albert Lea boys’ cross country team with a time of 16:43.7 at the Jim Flim Invitational held in Winona. The Tigers girls’ team was led by Haley Harms, who placed 19th with a time of 17:16.3.
  • The Albert Lea girls’ volleyball team picked up a 3-2 win over Red Wing at the high school gym. Julia Deyak led the Tigers with 33 assists.
  • The Albert Lea Tigers football team traveled to Winona and were defeated by the Winhawks 28-20. With the loss, coach Kevin Armbrust’s team was 0-4 on the season.

20 years

  • The Albert Lea Tigers girls’ soccer team traveled to Winona and played the Winhawks to a 2-2 tie. Tessa Christensen and Laura Hillman scored goals for the Tigers.
  • The Albert Lea girls’ volleyball team went 1-2-1 at the Jackson County Central Invitational, picking up their lone win over Vermillion, South Dakota. Stacie Thisius was 34-for-34 serving with seven ace serves, five digs and 13 kills to lead the Tigers in the four games.
  • The Albert Lea Tigers football team picked up their first home win in seven years as they defeated Winona 34-7 at Hammer Field. Corey Kuipers had two touchdowns with Ryan Truesdell, Mike Honeycutt and Corey Berggren each adding one.
  • The No. 3 ranked Mabel-Canton girls’ volleyball team traveled to Glenville and defeated the Wolverines 3-0. Jordan Claussen was 11-for-12 serving with two ace serves, 17 assists, 14 digs and two kills in the loss.

  • Lenny Hultgren, a member of the Albert Lea Tigers football team was named to the WCCO Radio All-State Team of the Week on the Prep Parade show.
  • The Albert Lea Tigers cross country team had a convincing three team sweep with victories over Austin, Rochester John Marshall and Mankato East. Dan Fjelstad was the Tigers top finisher, completing the three-mile course at Brookside in a time of 15:45.
  • Playing in his 2,827th game, Al Kaline of the Detroit Tigers became the 12th player in Major League Baseball history to record 3,000 hits.
  • The Minnesota North Stars were defeated by their New Haven farm team 6-2 in an exhibition game played in St. Cloud. Pete LoPresti of Eveleth and Dave Heitz of Minneapolis Roosevelt were in the nets for New Haven.
  • The Albert Lea girls’ volleyball team traveled to Mankato and defeated the new East team 2-0 behind the play of Sue Shoff, Kris Wadding and Jodi Pierson.
  • The Alden-Conger football team ran the ball for 412 yards as they defeated Delevan 58-0. Randy Whelan had touchdown runs of two, three and 20 yards to lead the Blackhawks.
  • The Albert Lea girls’ tennis team traveled to Faribault and came home with a 5-1 victory. Winning matches in singles were Wanda Thompson, Lisa Sigurdson and Beth Olson. In doubles the teams of Suzy Denzene and Emily Wardrip and Jody Gross and Chris Gilbertson got wins.
  • Bert Blyleven threw a nine-inning four hitter as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Oakland A’s 1-0 in front of 3211 fans at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum. With the win, Blyleven was 17-16 on the year.

Alumni update

Magnus Nelson, grandson of 1957 Albert Lea High School graduate and former Tiger head football coach Jerry Nelson, is a redshirt sophomore offensive lineman on the Winona State football team this fall, He is a 2022 graduate of Brookings High School in South Dakota. The Warriors next home game will be on Oct. 5 when they host Minnesota State University Moorhead at 1 p.m.
