- Trevor Plouffe hit the 10,000th home run in the history of the Minnesota Twins/Washington Senators franchise during the Twins’ 9-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.
- Brent Miller defeated Andy Petersen to capture the championship of the 87th annual Shortstop Golf Tournament that was held at Green Lea Golf Course.
- The Albert Lea volleyball team defeated Burnsville 3-1. Julia Deyak led the Tigers with 31 set assists and three blocks. Hope Landsman added 10 kills and 11 digs.
- Brady Loch and Alex Syverson were first flight winners at the Wedgewood Cove Golf Shootout. Brett Richards and Matt Reeck captured the second flight.
20 years
- The Albert Lea girls’ tennis team fell 6-1 to the Owatonna Huskies. Elizabeth Thompson and Cara Thorn picked up the only win for the Tigers at No. 2 doubles.
- The Albert Lea girls’ swimming and diving team fell to Mankato West 99-78 at the high school pool. Jackie Elwood took second in the 100-meter butterfly and the team of Samantha Cole, Whitney Walters, Kaeli Wayne and Leah Matheson took second in the 200-meter relay.
- Mankato West came to Hammer Field and defeated the Albert Lea Tigers football team 35-6. Travis Klatt scored the only touchdown of the game on an 18-yard pass from Zach Marty.
- The Alden-Conger football team opened their season with a 36-6 loss to Spring Grove. Ryan Wach ran the ball 16 times for 139 yards, and Josh Cords added 42 yards on six carries for the Knights.
50 years
- The Albert Lea Tigers football team opened their season at home with a 21-14 win over Robbinsdale Cooper. Kevin Marian, Dolf Moon and Matt Wilson scored touchdowns for the Tigers.
- Faron Bremseth topped off the scoring with a 67-yard run in the fourth quarter as Glenville defeated Freeborn 18-6 in the Border League football opener for both teams.
- Defending champion Jim Ihnot of Minneapolis won the annual Shortstop Golf Tournament at the Albert Lea Country Club. Wayne Sletten won the Executive Flight with Dick Lein taking the Presidential Flight.
- The Albert Lea cross country team finished fifth at the St. Olaf Invitational. Dan Fjelstad finished second in his group of runners and fifth overall with a time of 13.20.
- Several local water skiers took part in the Albert Lea Water Ski Tournament at Edgewater Bay. John Demo took third in Men’s I Tricks, Sarah Wolgamot second in Women’s Slalom and Mark Stadheim third in Boys’ Slalom.
- Daredevil Evel Knievel was preparing to jump the Snake River Canyon in Twin Falls, Idaho, in a rocket-like vehicle that was to carry him 2,000 feet at 400 miles per hour.
- Suzy Denzene, Wanda Thompson, Emily Wardrip, Margo Lybeck and Lisa Sigurdson were all returning letterwinners for the Albert Lea girls’ tennis team that was being coached by Jane Christensen.
- The Albert Lea volleyball team opened their season with a 2-0 win over Winona at the Central Gym. In the second game, Sue Shoff served nine straight points to open the game that led the Tigerettes to victory.
A family affair
Two members of the St. Olaf College football coaching staff are brothers that played high school football for Alden-Conger. Mitchell Kleinschrodt is a 2008 graduate and is special teams coordinator/defensive back coach. His brother Lucas Kleinschrodt is a 2010 graduate and is the defensive coordinator.
The Oles open their home schedule on Sept. 14 at 1 p.m. against Luther College.
