Administrator’s Corner by Marie Adams
As I enter my second year as principal of Hawthorne Elementary, I am more energized than ever about the work being done across our Albert Lea Area elementary teams. We are united in our mission to support students holistically, and one of the ways we’re doing that is through our Teach to Heal framework. This approach helps us address the whole student, ensuring we meet not just their academic needs but their social and emotional needs as well.
At the heart of our academic efforts is the Science of Reading. We are committed to equipping our educators with the tools they need to foster strong literacy skills, and our LETRS training has been vital in helping staff stay current with best practices in reading instruction. Our curriculum adoption of Wit & Wisdom is another important step. It aligns with the latest research and provides a comprehensive approach to building knowledge and language skills in students.
Here at Hawthorne, we’re also focusing on increasing engagement at all levels — staff, students and the community. Recently, we hosted a successful Walk-a-thon fundraiser that brought everyone together in support of our school events. Beyond that, we’ve created meaningful leadership opportunities for our students, like HW Student News, HW Conflict Managers — where students use Second Step Problem Solving skills — and Student Council. These programs help students take ownership of their school experience, developing their leadership and problem-solving skills.
Overall, we are excited to continue growing together as a school community, supporting our students in the best way possible. I am thrilled about the direction we’re headed and look forward to another great year at Hawthorne!
