As I navigate my adult life, I often get asked, “Who was the most influential teacher you had growing up?” The answer comes to me quickly, even if it feels like a question that deserves more reflection. Mrs. Dorman was my first-grade teacher at Hawthorne Elementary in Albert Lea. I was also very lucky to have her for a second time as my fifth-grade teacher.

Even though many years have passed, she impacted my life forever with her passion for teaching and her genuine enjoyment of being around us kids. Mary Jo truly cared about each of her students, striving to make a lasting impact on our lives. She consistently encouraged us to be better than the day before, taught us important life lessons, and, most importantly, showed us that school could be fun.

Her lessons were filled with excitement, and she had a remarkable ability to recognize and nurture our strengths while patiently helping us with our weaknesses. She always went the extra mile, dedicating her time and energy to ensure every student succeeded.

As I’ve grown older, I realize that Mary Jo’s passion for education hasn’t faded, even though she is no longer in the classroom. She continues to care deeply for the students in our district, aiming to make a lasting impact on those who may never get the chance to experience her passion firsthand in the classroom.

So, when I reflect on that initial question, I know the answer without hesitation: my most influential teacher was Mary Jo Dorman.

As Election Day approaches, I encourage you to vote for Mary Jo Dorman. Her experience and knowledge make her an excellent choice for representing District 241 on the school board.
