Nose for News by Sarah Stultz

Here we are with less than a month to go until Election Day, and I couldn’t be happier.

I think I’ve written about it before, but election season isn’t my favorite time of year at the newspaper, though I do enjoy when I see more people get involved at the local, state and federal levels and especially when I see more people attend public meetings.

I also enjoy seeing people care about what is happening in the country, though I always get worried about the sources that people use to get their information from.

More often than not these days, it’s easy to find stories that look real but have questionable origins.

These stories can make all the difference in what people think is true — and in some cases are even created to sway the public one way or another fraudulently.

For those who have not voted yet — and for anyone for that matter — I encourage you to check and re-check your sources.

Find a neutral party that does not benefit if either presidential candidate wins and that has a history of integrity and community service.

Is the source connected to a candidate or political party? If so, that could be critical because it can show bias.

It’s especially important in this election because we’re seeing so many versions of truth presented.

Aside from looking for credible news sources, I also encourage people to hold the course and show civility to your friends and neighbors who may think differently then you.

Just because they are voting for a different candidate than you doesn’t mean they are a bad person, they just think differently.

Until we can recognize this, it will be difficult for our country to move forward again.

Here’s to getting through the next few weeks!

Get involved, do your research, vote your conscience and, most importantly, remember that if you don’t like what happens, get involved to better the community at the local level.
