  • The Albert Lea girls’ soccer team advanced to the Section 2A semi-finals where they would be playing Mankato East after they defeated Waseca 2-0 in a quarterfinal game played at Hammer Field. Haley Lamping and Megan Kortan scored second half goals for the Tigers in the win.
  • The Albert Lea Tigers volleyball team defeated Austin 3-0 at the high school gym. Julia Deyak had 33 set assists to lead the Tigers.
  • The Albert Lea Tigers football team traveled to Mankato East and were defeated by the Cougars 59-14. Tim Christianson carried the ball six times for 58 yards including a touchdown. Dylan Lestrud added the other score for the Tigers.

20 years

  • The Albert Lea boys’ soccer team played Rochester Mayo to a 1-1 overtime tie at Hammer Field. Cody Otterson scored the only goal for the Tigers.
  • Trailing 2-0, the Albert Lea volleyball team rallied to win the next three games to defeat the Austin Packers 3-2. Katherine Ladwig was 10-for-12 serving with two aces, 27 set assists, two blocks and five digs to lead the Tigers.
  • Jeff Baumann, Diane Johns, Brad Adams and Al Hagen teamed up to win the first annual Glenville-Emmons Athletic Boosters golf tournament that was played at the Northwood Country Club.
  • Miranda Kral was 13-for-13 serving with three aces and 28 digs to lead the Glenville-Emmons volleyball team to a 3-1 win over LeRoy-Ostrander at the Glenville gym.

  • The Albert Lea Tigerette volleyball team defeated Red Wing 2-0. Kris Wadding, Mary Speltz and Sabrina Ost were outstanding with sets while Sue Shoff and Janet Matheson added great spikes.
  • Scott Farnes of Albert Lea and Gay Iverson of Emmons were named to the WCCO Radio All-State Team of the Week on their Prep Parade program.
  • At the Albert Lea Hockey Association’s first meeting of the year, Al Brown was named president, Don Pitts, vice-president, Don Falk, secretary and Chris Dahl, treasurer.
  • The Albert Lea Tigerettes synchronized swimming team defeated Rochester Mayo 65-11 in their last dual meet of the season to run their record to 4-0. Coach Brenda Ludtke praised the girls for their hard work to earn their perfect record.
  • The Albert Lea Tigers football team traveled to Austin and were defeated by the Packers 10-0. Dolph Moon carried the ball 12 times for 80 yards for the Tigers.
  • Dwight Greibrok, Rod Olson and Jack Haines scored touchdowns as the Glenville Trojans defeated Morristown 19-14 in Gopher Conference play.
  • Minnesota North Stars goalie Cesare Maniago recorded his 26th career shutout as the Minnesota Norgth Stars defeated the Washington Capitals 6-0 at the Met Center.
  • Mark Minehart took first place in the open senior division and Mitch Pederson took first in the open junior division at the first annual Octoberfest Karate Tournament held in LaCrosse.

Hall of Fame inductee

Gus Courrier, a 1966 graduate of Kiester High School who currently lives near Mansfield, will be inducted into the Minnesota Fastpitch Softball Hall of Fame on Oct. 26 at a ceremony being held at the Jackpot Junction Casino in Morton. His 43-year career as a pitcher also saw him get inducted into the Freeborn County Fastpitch Softball Hall of Fame in 1995.
