  • The Minnesota Gophers football team took back the Little Brown Jug with a 30-14 win over Michigan at Ann Arbor.
  • After being with the organization for 27 years, Ron Gardenhire was fired as manager of the Minnesota Twins. His managerial record with the team was 1068-1039.
  • Kathryn Flaherty recorded six saves to lead the Albert Lea girls’ soccer team to a 2-1 win over Mankato West at Hammer Field.
  • The Alden-Conger girls’ volleyball team defeated Madelia 3-0. Cassie Gilster had 11 kills and 11 digs for the Knights. Liesel Theusch added six kills, two blocks and 11 digs.

20 years

  • The Alden-Conger football team celebrated homecoming with a 50-6 win over Cleveland. Scott Martinson completed 14 of 20 passes for 306 yards with three touchdowns for the Knights.
  • The Albert Lea Tigers football team traveled to Rochester and were defeated by the Century Panthers 42-14. Ryan Truesdell scored on a one-yard touchdown run and also on a nine-yard pass from Arik Mattson for the Tigers.
  • Former Albert Lea Tiger football player Andy Davis was named the North Division Defensive Player of the Week for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Playing for Crown College, he had nine solo tackles, 10 assists and a forced fumble in the Storm’s game with Rockford College.
  • The Albert Lea girls’ soccer team took second place in the four-team Tiger Invitational held at Hammer Field. Leah Walters scored three goals for the Tigers in their opening 7-0 win over Mankato East.

  • Freshman linebacker Lyle Brandt of Albert Lea was a member of the Wartburg College football team.
  • Albert Lea Tigers football coach Jerry Nelson was honored as the Coach of the Week on WCCO Radio’s Prep Parade program. Tiger player Dave Rake was named to the All-Star Team of the Week.
    Ron Rasmusson and Wilford Knudtson each shot a 41 to win the first flight in a golf tournament held at the Arrowhead Country Club.
  • Dave Goltz pitched a two-hitter to pick up his 10th win of the season as the Minnesota Twins clinched third place in the American League West with a 6-0 shutout over the Texas Rangers. The game was played in front of 2,274 fans at Metropolitan Stadium,
  • The Albert Lea Tigers cross country team remained unbeaten with a 20-39 win over Winona. Albert Lea’s Dan Fjelstad set a new record at the Brookside course running the three miles in a time of 15:23.5.
  • The Cleveland Indians announced that they had hired Frank Robinson as their new manager. He was set to be the first black manager in the 105-year history on Major League Baseball.
  • The Albert Lea b-squad football team won their fourth game of the year with a 38-20 win over Owatonna. Vinny Cerrato, Gary Abben, Scott VerHey, Terry Fuller and Randy Schumacher scored touchdowns for the Bengals.
  • The Albert Lea Tigerette volleyball team won a 2-1 thriller over the rival Austin Packers in a match played at the old high school. In game three, the time ran out for the game with the Tigers leading 12-10. The timing watch was found to be incorrect and the players were brought back to finish the game, which the Tigers won 15-11. In the b-squad game, Connie Feuerhelm and Marilyn Claassen led the Tigers to a 2-0 sweep.

Eli Farris a 2024 graduate of Albert Lea High School is a forward on the Sheridan Hawks North American 3 Hockey League team based in Sheridan Wyoming.
Through his first eight games, he has four goals and four assists.
