The Waldorf D1 hockey team continued their tough November stretch. They played No. 1 Jamestown last weekend. Friday and Saturday, they were in North Dakota battling No. 2 Minot State. After falling 9-3 Friday, Waldorf was tied with Minot State late in the game Saturday, but the Beavers scored a late goal to secure a 2-1 win and earn a sweep over the Warriors.
Despite losing twice to Jamestown last weekend, Waldorf rose in the rankings to No. 25. This marks the first time Waldorf is ranked in the top 25. Friday night, Minot State scored in the first minute. Waldorf tied the game just minutes later on an Audun Caple goal. Minot State scored seconds later to regain the lead. But Waldorf would tie the game again on a Liam Wallace tally. The Beavers scored late in the period and took a 3-2 lead. Waldorf tied the game for the third time early in the second period. JJ Adams did the honors and the game was tied at 3. It was all Minot State after that. They scored two quick goals following Adams’ goal and took a 5-3 lead. They would add four goals in the third period to claim the 9-3 win.
Saturday’s game was much more defensive minded. The two teams failed to score in the first period. Wallace gave Waldorf the lead in the second period with an unassisted goal. That 1-0 lead stood going in the third period. Minot State tied the game at 1 with a goal 7:38 into the period. It stayed that way until the closing minutes when Minot State got the game-winning goal with 1:33 remaining.
Matthew Loney was great in net for Waldorf with 43 saves.
Waldorf (4-10) is off until Dec. 6-7 when they host the University of Mary.
