Though Vice President Kamala Harris carried Minnesota on Wednesday on a ticket with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the duo did not win in Freeborn County.
According to unofficial local results, former President Donald Trump and running mate JD Vance received 10,001 votes out of the 16,703 cast in the county for the race, or 59.88%, while Harris and Walz received 6,449, or 38.61%, of votes.
Support for Trump has increased in Freeborn County over the three presidential elections he has been a part of.
In 2020, there were 9,578 county voters, or 56.95%, who voted for Trump and Mike Pence, and there were 6,889 voters, or 40.96%, who picked Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
In 2016, Trump received 8,808 votes in Freeborn County, or 54.89%, compared to Hillary Clinton’s 6,041 votes, or 37.64%. That year 1,080 voters selected third-party candidates.
A Democrat winning streak
Minnesota has supported Democrats for president for 52 years.
In choosing Walz, Harris elevated a Midwestern governor, veteran and union supporter who helped enact an ambitious Democratic agenda for his state, including sweeping protections for abortion rights and generous aid to families.
No Republican presidential candidate has carried Minnesota since Richard Nixon in 1972, although Donald Trump came close in 2016 when he fell just 1.5 percentage points short of Hillary Clinton.
The Associated Press declared Harris the winner at 2:47 a.m. EST.
