• The Alden-Conger boys’ basketball team won their season opener for the first time in four years as they defeated Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman 76-52. Eli Hallman led the Knights with 25 points.
• Minnesota Vikings star Bobby Bryant was the scheduled guest speaker at the Eagles Vikings Night. Tickets were $2.50 each which included a Texas Bar-B-Que ribs dinner.
• Glenville-Emmons senior Rachel Hagen signed a letter of intent to be a cheerleader at Waldorf College.
• In the season opener for the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team, Rochester Mayo defeated the Tigers 81-57. Jake Thompson scored 17 points to lead the Tigers with Jakob Kilby adding 13 and Dedoch Chan 10.

20 years

• The Albert Lea girls’ hockey team defeated Austin 5-4 at the City Arena. Laura Hillman recorded a hat trick for the Tigers with Amy Leach and Jenna Christensen each adding one goal.
• Minnesota Twins shortstop Christian Guzman left the team when he signed a $16 million, four-year contract with the new Washington D.C. team that had relocated from Montreal.
• In their season opener, the Alden-Conger girls’ basketball team defeated Glenville-Emmons 55-18. Jenny Krueger had a game high 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Knights. Ashley Lau led the Wolverines with four points.

50 years

• Albert Lea boys’ basketball coach Orrie Jirele announced that Bob McCamy and Steve Ladwig would be team captains for the upcoming season.
• Hank Aaron signed a two-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he was slated to be the team’s designated hitter.
• With a trip to the state girls’ basketball tournament on the line, Kasson-Mantorville defeated Alden-Conger 45-41. Deana Reyerson scored 18 points to lead the Blackhawks.
• In the second annual Endres adult amateur hockey tournament, Minneapolis defeated the Rangers 7-6 in sudden death overtime 7-6. Gary Hillman scored two goals with Ron Rockwell, Bruce Anderson, Mike Raymond and Tom Baas adding one.
• Head coach Gary Koeder along with assistant coach Lynn Turnbull were preparing the Albert Lea Tigerette girls’ basketball team for their season opener with Austin Pacelli.
• In the main event of All-Star Wrestling at the Albert Lea Armory, Ivan Putski picked up the win over Baron Von Raschke by disqualification as Von Raschke illegally hit Putski’s head into the ring post.
• Former Albert Lea Tiger gridders Brad Shoff and Mark Bothum received letters from Golden Valley Lutheran College for their play during the past football season.
• The Minnesota Twins announced they were moving their starting times back to 8 p.m. after trying a 7:30 p.m. start the previous season. Ticket prices were remaining the same with box seats at $4.50, reserved seats $3.50 and general admission $2.

Alumni update

Dakota Jahnke, a 2023 graduate of Albert Lea High School is a goaltender on the Hudson Havoc hockey team based in Hudson Wisconsin. The Havoc are a member of the United States Premiere Hockey League.
