The Freeborn County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved a 3.9% increase in the county’s levy for 2025, down from the preliminary levy passed in September.
Board Chairman Brad Edwin said a lot of time and effort was spent trying to get the tax levy down to what was ultimately passed through the work of the finance manager, administration, department heads and the county board.
The preliminary levy was set at 29.87 million, or an 8.92% increase, while the final local tax levy that was approved was set at about $28.49 million. About $16.9 million of that will go toward the general fund. About $6.19 million will go toward the human services fund, and about $5.36 million will go toward the road and bridge fund. About $103,000 will go toward the public health fund, $1.3 million will go toward the capital improvement fund, about $287,000 will go toward the county library fund and about $708,000 will go toward the capital improvement bond. The county will receive $2.36 million in state aid.
Total expenditures in the approved budget total $75.79 million.
The projected tax impact was not immediately available.
