Tigers tie Northfield, head to Warroad for holiday tournament

Freshman winger Haley Austinson scored twice for the Albert Lea as the Tiger girls skated to a 2-2 tie with Northfield Tuesday evening. The Tigers move to 9-1-1 on the season and remain at the top of the Big 9 standings.

Austinson gave the Tigers the lead in the first period while on the penalty kill. Senior Aryah Hansen stole the puck from a Northfield defender behind the goal line, passing it in front of the net where Austinson caught the pass and beat Northfield goalie Macy Mueller low stick side.

Later in the first the freshman forward struck again, this time taking a breakout pass from senior Mika Cichosz and rushing the puck the length of the ice, beating Mueller with a backhand between the legs. Albert Lea outshot Northfield 10-3 in the period.

Northfield battled back with two goals from sophomore forward Emma Peroutka, including one on the powerplay with just over three minutes left in the game which forced overtime. Neither team had any real scoring chances in the overtime period. Albert Lea outshot Northfield 42-20 on the night and senior goaltender Jayda Moyer finished with 18 saves.

Class A #11 ranked Albert Lea will head to Warroad Dec. 26-28 where they will face #5 Mound Westonka, #4 Warroad and # 20 Crookston.
