- NRHEG”S Carlie Wagner made a three-pointer with 1:18 and a jump shot with 55 seconds to go to lead the Minnesota Gopher’s women’s basketball team to a 65-61 win over Indiana. Wagner finished the game with 13 points.
- Northfield defeated the Albert Lea boys’ hockey team 3-2 at the City Arena. Jack Pulley and Sam Chalmers had goals for the Tigers.Payton Cech scored 17 points and Madi Ziebell added 14 as the Glenville-Emmons girls’ basketball team defeated Immanuel Lutheran 55-35.
20 years
- The Alden-Conger boys’ basketball team was defeated by Mankato Loyola 82-45. Scott Martinson led the Knights with 21 points.
- Ryan Moore scored 19 points and added six rebounds and three steals to lead the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team to a 51-37 win over Rochester Mayo.
- The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team extended their winning streak to 12 games with a 6-3 win over Rochester John Marshall. Peter Bracker scored two goals with Jon Breuer, Beau Larson, Mark Walton and Corey Ellertson adding one.
- The Albert Lea boys’ swimming and diving team took third place at the South St. Paul Packer Invitational. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Ethan Berg, Josh Anderson, Josh Elwood and Ben Schreiber took first for the Tigers.
50 years
- Albert Lea wrestlers Neil Sather, Brian Ayres and Jim Palmer won the last three matches to give the Albert Lea Tigers wrestling team a 23-18 win over Anoka.
- The Fairmont Cardinals scored a basket in the last second to give them a 63-61 win over Albert Lea. Steve Ladwig led the Tigers with 24 points with Bob McCamy adding 12.
- The Endres Rangers men’s hockey team defeated Mankato 5-2 in a game played at the Fairgrounds Arena. Mark Breck scored two goals with Ed Beers, Dick Osmundson and Mark Hangge adding one.
- The Albert Lea b-squad hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with Austin. Tony Richie and Todd Dahl scored goals for the Bengals.
- The Albert Lea girls’ basketball team outscored Austin Pacelli 15-4 in the third quarter en route to a 31-30 win over the Shamrocks. Sherri Hultgren led the Tigerettes with 14 points.
- In his last year of eligibility, Ralph Kiner was elected to Baseball’s Hall of Fame. In his 10-year career, he hit 369 home runs and batted .279.
- The Howard Jensen farm near Glenville hosted snowmobile races. Trophies were awarded by the Glenville Recreation Center that was sponsoring the event.
- The Albert Lea boys’ swimming and diving team went on the road and defeated Owatonna 105-60. Albert Lea had two double winners with Don Kennison taking the 200-freestyle and 100-breaststroke and Robin Sanders taking the 200-individual medley and the 100-butterfly.
- Behind the hot hands of Gary Tukua and Kevin McKean, who scored 18 and 17 apiece, Freeborn defeated Delevan 73-47 in Gopher Conference boys’ basketball.
Alumni update
Seth Larson, a senior forward on the Columbia College men’s basketball team in Columbia, Mo., is averaging 12.8 points per game this season through the team’s first 21 games. He is the son of 1984 Albert Lea High School graduates Andy and Kris (Hareid) Larson.
