  • The Alden-Conger girls’ basketball team fell to St. Clair 67-50 at the Winona State Invitational. Liesel Theusch had 14 points and Erika Bute added 12 to lead the Knights.
  • Megan Kortan scored 31 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead the Albert Lea Tigers girls’ basketball team to a 64-51 win over Stewartville.
  • At the Rumble on the Red Wrestling Invitational in West Fargo, N.D., the Albert Lea Tigers placed sixth out of 62 teams. The junior varsity team took first place out of 58 teams. Triston Westerlund went 5-0 to take home the varsity championship at 220-pounds.

  • The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team defeated Austin 9-3 at the City Arena. Jon Breuer had a hat trick with Quinn Ellingson and Dustin Trail adding two goals and Tony Dugstad and Beau Larson one.
  • The Albert Lea girls’ basketball team defeated Mankato East 44-38 at the high school gym. Hali Hendrickson led the Tigers with 12 points with Cara Thorn adding nine.
  • Parker Skophammer scored 23 points, but his effort fell short as the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team traveled to Mankato East and were defeated by the Cougars 83-53.
  • The Glenville-Emmons girls’ basketball team fell to Lyle-Pacelli 45-34 at the Glenville gym. Amanda Epland scored 11 points and added seven rebounds to lead the Wolverines.

  • Minnesota Twins owner Calvin Griffith offered a contract to 38-year-old slugger Harmon Killebrew to be a player-coach for the upcoming season.
  • The Albert Lea J.V. boys’ basketball team defeated Faribault 59-58. Tom Dyrdal led the Bengals with 22 points with Paul Sherman grabbing 15 rebounds.
  • Mark Olberding scored 16 points and Mark Landsberger added 15 as the University of Minnesota men’s basketball team defeated Illinois 75-47 at Williams Arena.
  • The Austin Packers hockey team defeated Albert Lea 7-5 at Riverside Arena. Dale Hendrickson had two goals for the Tigers with Vinny Cerrato, Clark Johnson and Greg Hanson adding one.
  • The Albert Lea boys’ gymnastics team placed second in a three-team meet behind Fairmont. Mark Sevilla was part of a three-way tie for first place on the trampoline with a score of 5.1.
  • The Glenville girls’ basketball team won their fifth game of the season as they defeated Wells 41-35. Maureen Adams led the Trojans with 28 points. In the b-squad game, Cindy Mehus scored 11 points to lead Glenville to a 28-13 win.
  • Nearly 1,000 fans turned out at Austin’s Riverside Arena to watch the Austin Mavericks defeat the St. Cloud Junior Blues 3-1 in Midwest Junior Hockey League play. The game ended with a brawl between fans and players.
  • The Minnesota Fighting Saints gave up two goals in the last 97 seconds of play to fall 3-2 to the Edmonton Oilers. John Arbour and Ted Hampson had goals for the Saints.
  • Henry Boucha of the Minnesota North Stars was undergoing surgery to correct double vision caused by an eye injury after being hit by a stick from Dave Forbes in a game against the Boston Bruins.

Alumni update

Zach Glazier, a 2019 graduate of Albert Lea High School is a sixth (Covid year) senior on the South Dakota State wrestling team where he is competing at 197-pounds. He expects to be back on the mat soon for the Jackrabbits after a recent injury.
