- The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team defeated Eveleth-Gilbert 5-1 at the City Arena. Alex Claassen scored two goals for the Tigers with Matt Carlson, Sam Chalmers and Brady Loch adding one.
- The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team was defeated by the Austin Packers 90-50. Dedoch Chan led the Tigers with 29 points and seven rebounds.
- The Alden-Conger boys’ basketball team was defeated by Mankato Loyola 68-48. Jacob Wallin scored 10 points and added 11 rebounds for the Knights.
- The Albert Lea Tigers wrestling team defeated Rochester Century 67-7 and Mankato West 49-21 in a triangular meet in Mankato. Santana Acosta picked up two wins for the Tigers.
20 years
- The Albert Lea girls’ hockey team defeated Waseca 5-3 in non-conference play in Waseca. Amy Leach, Jenna Christensen, Laura Hillman, Tessa Christensen and Anna Sigurdson had goals for the Tigers.
- Eric Carlson had five goals and Ben Benson added three as Bowman Electric defeated Out Tech 14-7 in Albert Lea Parks and Recreation In-House Youth Hockey play.
- Justin Drescher, Jesse Bangert and Derek Sabinish scored goals to lead the Albert Lea Junior Gold hockey team to a 3-0 win over Hudson, Wisc.
- The Albert Lea boys’ swimming and diving team was defeated by Farmington 100.5-82.5. Ethan Berg, Ben Schreiber, Josh Elwood and Josh Anderson combined for first place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
50 years
- The Pittsburg Steelers defeated the Minnesota Vikings 16-6 in Super Bowl IX in a game played in New Orleans. Terry Brown’s return for a touchdown after a blocked punt by Matt Blair was the only score for the Vikings.
- Ross Dahl recorded a hat trick as the Albert Lea Tigers hockey team defeated Columbia Heights 7-6 at the Fairgrounds Arena.
- The Albert Lea Tigerette basketball team lost their second game of the season under coach Gary Koeder when they were defeated 36-29 at Owatonna. Sheri Hultgren led Albert Lea with eight points. In the b-squad game, Marcie Myer’s seven points led to a 27-21 win for Albert Lea.
- Dale Koestler scored 22 points to lead the Kiester boys’ basketball team to a 51-49 win over Glenville. Jeff Rayman led the Trojans with 19 points.
- Harmon Killebrew requested his unconditional release from the Minnesota Twins and signed a contract with the Kansas City Royals.
- Minnesota Vikings guard Milt Sundae attended an exclusive showing of Cadillacs at the Motor Inn Company in Albert Lea.
- The Albert Lea boys’ gymnastics team defeated Waseca 52.35-40.80. Steve Peterson had a first place finish on the floor exercise, Mark Cormier on the horse and Mark Sevilla on the trampoline to lead the Tigers.
- The Albert Lea boys’ basketball team was defeated by Winona 50-39. Steve Ladwig led the Tigers with 17 points. In the b-squad game, Winona defeated the Bengals 38-34. Paul Miller led the team in scoring with 11 points.
- In Glenville City League basketball play, the X-Raiders defeated the Gophers 50-48. Clark Cipra led the Gophers with 22 points with Larry Knutson adding 16. Wayne Perleberg led the X-Raiders with 14.
Alumni update
Joseph Yoon, a 2023 graduate of Albert Lea High School is in his second year with the Kenai River Brown Bears hockey team in Soldotna, Alaska, who are a member of the North America Hockey League’s Tier II Junior League. The forward scored four goals and added eight assists in 2023-24 and has seven goals and five assists through 34 games this season.
