State welfare payments stopped

Welfare payments in Minnesota stopped but, according to a court order, are going to resume.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services this morning sent an email message to the counties telling them that July checks, normally sent out at the end of June, would not be sent because of the state budget impasse.

“Because the state dos not have an approved budget for fiscal year 2012, issuance of July cash benefits did not run as normally scheduled June 27th or 28th. We want you to be aware that Minnesota Family Investment Program clients who would normally have access to their July benefits in their electronic benefit transfer accounts tomorrow might call their county workers,” states the email, which was sent to Freeborn County Department of Human Services along with similar human services departments across Minnesota.

It goes on to state that the checks would be issued once the state gets either a budget or a directive.

A directive indeed came Wednesday morning. Ramsey County Chief Judge Kathleen Gearin ruled that welfare services are among critical services. County officials now are waiting on what the state Department of Human Services will do next.
