United Methodist Women met in the fireside room on May 5 for the annual memorial service. Following the piano prelude by Merle Stensrud, members of Martha Circle conducted an program using flowers and candles. Those participating were Sharon Nelson, Jody Bromeland, Rose Hood and Marcelle Ernston, who commemorated Thais Fredrickson, Mary Smith, Maxine Sweet, Maryl Anderson and Sandra Christopherson. Marcelle Ernston opened the business meeting with a reading from the prayer calendar and prayer. Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Fern Urbatsch. Correspondence was read and circle reports taken. Treasurer Ruth Vermedahl reported balance on hand and that a check has been made for the least coin offering for Church Women United.

Spiritual growth chairwoman, Adean Turner, used readings on a mother’s love. The daily devotional “Upper Room” has a 75-year history, according to Judy Kary, with 102 countries and many worldwide testimonials.

Ernston thanked members for helping with bingo at Good Samaritan and other church activities. Gladys Wagner reminded the group of May Friendship Day at First Lutheran Church with the theme “Living the Vision.” On May 20, the Church Women United Scholarship luncheon will be at Trinity Lutheran Church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All were urged to attend each of these activities.

The book “Can We Talk About Race” was reviewed by Dorothy Balder. Rose Hood reported sending 15 cards. Judy Hargrave attended the Emma Norton fundraiser dinner at Wells. She reported the speakers were inspiring, including a 52-year-old alcoholic who is starting life over by being able to live at “Emma’s Place.” Ernston discussed the district meeting at Windom based on the “Charter for Racial Justice.” A proposal to change the summer UMW coffee to a brunch open to all after church on June 20 met with approval.

The School of Christian Mission at St. John’s University will be July 13-18 with weekday and weekend sessions. Registration forms are now available. Marie Reese and Jody Bromeland spoke to the group expressing thanks for prayers, friendship and support.

The June 2 meeting will have Joyce Shaman as the speaker.

The meeting adjourned with singing the “Song of Hope.”

Following the meeting, a salad luncheon was served by Mary Grace Circle.
