ST. PAUL — The State Patrol is increasing its presence on state highways on Thursday — because June 30 is historically the deadliest day on Minnesota roads.
The Minnesota State Patrol is calling Thursday “Maroon Day.” Every state trooper and commercial vehicle inspector will be on patrol. That’s almost 600 troopers.
State Patrol Col. Kevin Daly says the goal is to have zero fatalities on Thursday.
The State Patrol says that since 2000, more fatal crashes have occurred on June 30 than any other day of the year. There have been 30 fatal crashes on that day, resulting in 35 deaths.
Lt. Eric Roeske says that leading into the holiday travel weekend, it’s more important than ever for drivers to pay attention, buckle up, and not drink and drive.
