“Wipe Our Debt,” or W.O.D., is the theme of the Sunday dinner sponsored by Leo Carey Post 56 of the American Legion.
Elimination of the post’s mortgage debt is what inspired this dinner event. Also, the post is trying to maintain its building at 142 N. Broadway Ave. as a place where so many local activities are currently taking place. These include events involving Post 56 and its auxiliary, and as a meeting place for Freemond Madson Post 447 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Glaydon Iverson Chapter 16 of the Disabled American Veterans, Fountain Lake Sportsmen Club and Old Car Club, plus an ARC monthly dance, a place for fish frys and other events sponsored by nonprofit groups, and as a location for other local family and organizational activities.
A very distinctive and visible part of Post 56 is the Honor Guard which has now expanded its coverage to the entire county to honor deceased veterans. For this group, having a place to call home is another incentive for this special dinner.
Post 56 is hosting what can be called an old fashioned Sunday dinner on Oct. 19 with serving from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This will be a choice of chicken, beef or pork, with mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable, lettuce salad, dessert and beverage. The cost is $15 per person or $25 for two people.
Also, on that Sunday, a donation of $51.26 or more per person will make the donor eligible for a drawing with a chance to win one of five prizes which are: one, a $200 gas card; two, a $100 grocery card; three, two tickets to the ACT season; four, a $50 gas card; and five, a $50 grocery card. The entire donation will go toward the debt and the donor may be eligible to receive a tax deduction benefit.
Tickets are available at the club, from members, or call 373-7993.
