NORTHWOOD, Iowa — An energetic, fun-loving young girl who could put a smile on your face.
That’s how family and friends are remembering Kadyn Halverson, 7, who was killed in May in Worth County while crossing the street to board a school bus.
About a month and a half after the incident, dozens of people gathered on Friday around the Northwood-Kensett High School track for a service and candlelight vigil in memory of the young girl.
People wrote about their experiences with Kadyn on white paper bags and then placed them around the track as they took a lap in Kadyn’s honor.
The family also sold Kadyn’s Law merchandise for anyone interested, including T-shirts, bracelets, window clings and buttons.
“Every day it’s hard,” said relative Courtney Meyer. “I don’t think it’s gotten any easier.”
Kadyn’s aunt and godmother, Kristen Meyer, who helped organize the event, said she wanted to do something to help keep a strict remembrance of Kadyn, who inspired many.
Kristen Meyer said she has fond memories of the little girl who she used to take almost everywhere when she was younger.
Courtney Meyer said she remembers Kadyn jumping around and twirling her dresses. She remembers times where they made a watercolor project and put on puppet shows.
Kadyn loved riding in a tractor, she added.
The Rev. Don Preston of United Methodist Church in Manly encouraged people to tell their family and friends that they love them.
“Don’t wait,” Preston said. “Sometimes we think we have all the time in the world. Tell them today. Tell them now before this weekend is over.”
He said Kadyn never waited to tell people caring or loving words.
He issued a prayer at the close of the night as a storm moved into the area.
