On the first day of filing for county positions on Tuesday, two people filed for Freeborn County sheriff.
Marc Johnson, Freeborn County deputy, and Mark Harig, current Freeborn County sheriff, both filed to run for sheriff on Tuesday.
In announcing his intent for re-election, Harig pointed out his highlights as sheriff thus far, including the opening of a new jail, garnering a federal contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the implementation of the Allied Radio Matrix for Emergency Response, also known as ARMER.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Freeborn County Commissioners and for the citizens of Freeborn County,” Harig said. “I look forward to continuing as your Sheriff to upgrade emergency management planning and training within the Sheriff’s Office to keep Freeborn County safe.”
Johnson was unavailable for comment this morning.
Positions up for election this fall include attorney, sheriff, auditor-treasurer, recorder, 2nd and 4th district commissioners and 3rd and 4th district soil and water district positions.
County commissioner Dan Belshan was among those filing for re-election on Tuesday. Belshan applied for the 2nd district commissioner position.
“I have the energy and time to address issues in a professional manner with researched facts and creative ideas for operating the county responsibly and openly,” Belshan said. “It’s been an honor to serve the people, and hopefully, they’ll want me to continue to be their voice on the county board.”
Other incumbents filing were Christopher Shoff for 4th district commissioner, Craig Nelson for county attorney and Dennis Distad for auditor-treasurer. Kelly Callahan filed for county recorder and no one has filed yet to run for the 3rd and 4th district soil and water district positions.
For Freeborn County district court judges John A. Chesterman filed to run for seat five of the 3rd district court, and Steve Schwab filed to run for seat three of the 3rd district court.
People wishing to file for a county race can do so at the Freeborn County Auditor-Treasurer’s Office in the Freeborn County Government Center. The cost is $20 for the Soil and Water Conservation District seats and $50 for the other county races, said Auditor-Treasurer Dennis Distad. The cost to file for a district court judge is $300.
