Editorial: Let’s keep the giving spirit

Do you remember what “Extreme Makever: Home Edition” Executive Producer Conrad Rickets said at the pep rally at Crossroads Church on Sept. 23?
He said the same volunteer spirit being used for the show can carry over to many aspects in our community. He said when there is a need, people should step up with a solution. He gave the example of an elderly woman who needs a ramp to her home’s door. He said the community should just build it for her because it is the right thing to do.
He’s right.
Let’s take this same volunteer spirit and use it in Freeborn County when the TV cameras are not rolling, too.
The next time the Freeborn County chapter of Habitat for Humanity needs volunteers to work on houses, let’s hope people sign up in droves. Let’s build homes for other deserving families homes.
When the United Way campaign needs money for deserving people in the area, let’s hope local residents give so much they blow way past the fundraising goal.
When the Freeborn County Relay for Life is seeking teams to participate in the fight against cancer, let’s hope people find time in the same way they found time for this “Extreme Makeover” effort.
Let’s carry this volunteer spirit forward.
Like Ricketts said, it’s the right thing to do.
