Six-run sixth lifts Alden-Conger baseball over Truman

This past weekend wasn’t a kind one for the Alden-Conger baseball team as the team was outscored 24-2 and suffered two losses Saturday at Medford.

Between Saturday and Monday, something seemed to click for the Knights.

Alden-Conger used timely hitting and patience at the plate to overcome an early deficit to defeat Truman 16-15 Monday in Alden.

Entering the fifth inning and trailing 14-10, the Knights forced four walks and loaded the bases twice in the inning, which resulted in a six-run inning to take the lead for good.

“We hadn’t been in many positions during the season where we had bases loaded and took advantage of that,” said Alden-Conger baseball coach Brett Sindelir. “They’re getting a little more contact than they had.”

Alden-Conger fell behind 6-1 after the first inning, highlighted by Truman’s Caleb Thate two-run home run.

The Knights worked back to a 9-9 tie in the third and Sindelir turned to senior Lucas Kleinschrodt to take over on the mound.

Kleinschrodt responded as he earned the win, going four innings and allowing just three hits and struck out six.

“For Kleinschrodt to step in there, as a senior, it really paid off,” Sindelir said. “I think his confidence increased and the team started believing in him, too.”

The team responded as well, with a six-run fifth inning that was highlighted by a Cam Majerus double that scored Jordan Johnson and Spencer Niebuhr to get the lead back at 15-14.

In a conference where there isn’t much variation, Sindelir feels that if the Knights can pick up wins in the last two games it will only help them going forward.

“If we can get another win under our belts, we’ll have better chance with the seedings that will happen on Wednesday.”
