DeBlois to perform Friday

Published 4:02 pm Saturday, September 13, 2008

Pianist Tony DeBlois will perform at 7 p.m. Friday at the Albert Lea Senior Center.

DeBlois travels the world to share his musical talents. Despite being born blind, autistic and with Savant Syndrome, DeBlois has played the piano since age 2 and entertained thousands. He has been called a musical genius, and only needs to hear a song once to play it.

He is not like most autistic savants, who play back a song after watching someone play it on the piano. Because he is blind, he has the ability to become a human radio and first started performing at senior centers at the age of 5.

His talents are being noticed internationally and he has just returned from a three-week concert tour of China, sponsored by the Chinese government.

DeBlois was the subject of the 1997 CBS movie, “Journey of the Heart,” which was inspired by actual events in his life. Additionally, he has appeared on two Catholic Global Showcase Specials (2001), The Learning Channel’s “Uncommon Genius,” Strange Science’s “Unusual People,” and “Understanding the Mysteries of Memory.”

He is the recipient of numerous awards, among them Chou, TaKuan Cultural and Educational Foundations Global “Love of Life Award,” the Faith and Family Foundation’s first Outstanding Achievement Award, the Reynolds Society Achievement Award, the Foundation for Exceptional Children’s “Yes, I Can” award for 1993, and the Panasonic-sponsored VSAarts Itzhak Perlman Award (1992).

Besides piano, he enjoys playing the organ, harmonica, guitar, harpiscord, English handbells, violin, banjo and drums.

The concert is open to the public. A freewill donation will be received.
