Knights exact revenge

Before Tuesday night’s volleyball match between Glenville-Emmons and its rival from Alden-Conger, the Wolverines had beaten the Knights three times in their last four meetings.

The Wolverines (2-8-1) had not just won those three matches, they dominated them in winning 12 games with only four loses.

That was not the case Tuesday in Glenville when the Knights (3-0) took some sweet revenge on the Wolverines in a 3-0 sweep, 25-20, 25-17, 25-11.

“This was a really good win for us, said Knights head coach Melissa Wasmoen. “They beat us the last few years so it was a big goal of ours to come in here and get this win.”

Game one was a back-and-forth affair as it seemed both teams were just feeling for the other’s weakness. The Wolverines may have let the first game get away from them when they held the biggest lead of the game up to that point at 17-14 but failed to put the Knights away.

From that point on A-C went on an 11-3 run to end the game with a 25-20 win.

“We definitely let that first game slip away,” said Wolverines head coach Lisa Ziebell. “Our service is getting better but we had some mistakes when we couldn’t afford them.”

The Knights carried the momentum from the first game into game two as they hustled their way to a 10 point lead at 16-6, mostly on the strength of their middle hitter, senior Haley Johnson who had 13 kills on the night to lead all players.

But as happens when two rivals get together, the Wolverines weren’t going to roll over for A-C and rallied to pull to within three at 18-15. Down the stretch though it was just too much Johnson for G-E to handle as she finished off the Wolverines with three consecutive kills to lead 24-16 before taking game two 25-17.

“I wasn’t pleased that we fell behind by 10, but I was happy to see them battle back and make a game of it,” Ziebell said.

As game three rolled around the Knights smelled blood and went for the knockout and once again went out in front by 10 at 15-5 before winning by 14, 25-11 for the 3-0 win.

“Haley (Johnson) is really fun to watch, she has that snap on the ball this year that results in a lot of sideouts, that has been big for us, Wasmoen said. “When these girls learn the things they can do on a volleyball court, it’s amazing to see them continue to do it and progress as the season goes on.”

Megan Miller led the Knights with 24 assists while Kailey Davis and Alayna Hall each had nine digs for the Wolverines.

G-E will host Grand Meadow Thursday while the Knights will have their hands full with a talented Maple River team in Alden.
