Blackhawks end season with four-game tilt

The Alden Blackhawks U-16 softball team played a rare quadrupleheader Monday night against Goodhue in Austin.
The two teams were supposed to meet at the beginning of the season twice, but when a regularly scheduled doubleheader was postponed because of rain, the two teams decided to meet halfway in Austin to make up the games. The league is set up so teams play doubleheaders and the games either last an hour or seven innings, which ever happens first.
The Blackhawks dropped the first three games of the four-game set before coming back for a 7-4 win. Lana Howe picked up the win, going five innings, striking out six and allowing four runs on six hits.
Goodhue won the first game 9-4, the second game 12-5 and the third game 17-0 before Alden came back in the fourth game.
The four games wrapped up the season for Alden, which finished third in its league in its first year.
The win in the final game capped off a successful inaugural season for the team as it had a roster of 18 players. Team organizer Lori Nelson expects the club to be around for next season and hopes it can lead the way for other age groups to begin as well. The Blackhawks include players from Albert Lea and Alden and is the lone traveling softball team for both towns.
“We definitely have come a long way,” Nelson said. “They play more as a team and that was really fun to see.”
