The Albert Lea Post 56 baseball team dominated the Rochester Red Hawks for 14 straight innings over two days at the District 1 Tournament at Hayek Field.
Then, suddenly, the Red Hawks finally got to the Tigers.
Leading 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Tigers gave up three runs on two home runs as the Red Hawks pulled within 6-5. The Red Hawks added three more runs in the seventh against pitchers Cole Sorenson and Aaron Klatt and the Tigers didn’t recover.
Trailing by one run and threatening to tie the game in the top of the ninth, Ethan Abben hit a sharp liner to Rochester’s shotstop. The shortstop leaped in the air, caught the ball and doubled up Makel Lunning at second base to win the game.
Each team now has one loss in the double-elimination tournament. Game 2 began around 4:30 at Hayek Field and the winner advances to the state tournament.
