SWAT team called to Albert Lea home

Albert Lea Police and Owatonna SWAT team members were sent to the 700 block of Pillsbury Avenue in Albert Lea Saturday after receiving a call about a possible suicide threat.

The SWAT teams were called to the scene after family members of a 29-year-old man living on the 700 block of Pillsbury Avenue called police at 10:52 a.m. Saturday about a possible suicide, Albert Lea Police Lt. J.D. Carlson said.

Police believed the man was armed with a shotgun inside the residence, Carlson said.

Patrolmen attempted to make contact with the man with no response.

The SWAT team was paged out to the residence at 11:50 a.m., Carlson It arrived at 12:41 p.m.

As a precautionary measure, residents of neighboring homes were asked by officials to remain in their homes.

Just before 2 p.m. the 29-year-old exited the house and police were able to approach him and take him into custody, Carlson said. He was the only occupant of the house at the time police arrived.

Police transported him to the Albert Lea Medical Center for evaluation, and he will be placed on a 72-hour hold.

Carlson said that police have been called to the residence in the past and the last incident came in 1999.

Carlson said he was pleased with the outcome and was glad that it was shortlived. Instances such as that sometimes can sometimes last much longer.

Albert Lea Medical Center crew, the Albert Lea Fire Department and the Albert Lea Salvation Army were also on the scene to provide assistance as needed.
