Golf tourney to raise funds for AEDs

Local law enforcement is teaming with Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea to raise funds for much needed life-saving equipment.

The Beat Goes On Golf Fundraiser for AEDs, to be held Saturday at Green Lea Golf Course, will raise part of the money needed to replace all automated external defibrillators for the Albert Lea Police Department, Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office and a majority of the county’s rural fire departments.

Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Tim Bennett is organizing the event and hopes the tournament raises $10,000 of the up to $65,000 needed to replace 30 defibrillators. Bennett said the current defibrillators are all five to seven years old and past the manufacturer’s warranty — meaning they aren’t guaranteed to work anymore.

Bennett called defibrillators “The first line of defense” in saving someone’s life.

“We can take portable ones out within a few minutes of a call and chances of survival and considerably more greater,” Bennett said.

AEDs are portable devices that automatically diagnose cardiac arrhythmia. Through electrical therapy, AEDs allow the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

Bennett said “The Beat Goes On” is the name of the hospital’s fundraising efforts, and once enough funds are raised they will purchase the defibrillators for law enforcement because they receive a discount for buying in bulk. But newer equipment will also help local law enforcement, fire departments and the hospital work together more effectively.

According to Bennett, the hospital’s newer defibrillators aren’t compatible with law enforcement’s which makes replacing and exchanging them at medical scenes more time consuming.

Bennett said the AEDs cost about $2,600 each and anyone wishing to register for the tournament, donate prizes or sponsor a hole may contract him at 507-377-5131.

The golf fundraiser begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and is a four-person best shot. Entry fee is $50 and includes 18 holes, prizes and a meal. There are already 16 teams registered but room for more. Carts cost extra and may be reserved at the golf course.
