It was clear from the beginning that Northwood-Kensett and Nashua-Plainfield were going to put up plenty of crooked numbers on the night.

The two teams played a doubleheader where the Huskies won the first game 12-7 and the second game 11-7, but the two teams had scored 13 runs after the third inning before anyone could blink. It quickly became who would blink first between the two teams and the Huskies pounded out a few more key hits than the Vikings en route to the win.

“For a small town Iowa school to come out and watch a night game like this … it’s beautiful,” Northwood-Kensett head coach Mike Reindl said. “In the middle of June what more could you ask for?”

The Vikings (2-9 overall, 0-5 Corn Bowl) played an aggressive style of baseball by making numerous stolen base attempts in the game but it wouldn’t pay off.

After the second inning Nashua-Plainfield led 5-1, but Northwood-Kensett rallied to close the game to 5-4. It was as close as it would get.

A number of Viking errors in the third allowed the Huskies to grab four runs and stake themselves to a 9-4 lead. Northwood-Kensett committed four errors in the game.

Reindl has noticed changes taking shape with his team as the season has progressed.

“My seniors are starting to play like seniors,” he said. “I’m getting some leadership and the young kids are starting to come around. It’s time for them to make some changes and I think they will be successful.”

Spencer Capitani started for Northwood-Kensett and he went seven innings, allowing 12 runs on nine hits while striking out three and walking four.

In the second game of the night it was much more of the same as the two teams combined for 18 runs and 37 for the night.

The Vikings held a 3-2 lead after the first inning of the second game, but that wouldn’t last either as Nashua-Plainfield stormed back for five in the third frame to take a 7-3 lead.

Northwood-Kensett tried to work itself back in the game in the fifth inning by scoring two run to close it to 9-6 but the Huskies continued to find the runs they needed to protect their lead.
