The annual Albert Lea Civic Music Association Music Scholarships winners have been announced for the 2011 season. The first place Jerdet Summer Music Camp Scholarship for Junior High students was awarded to James Dundas, from Wells, for clarinet, and second place was awarded to Julie Otten, from Hayward, for piano. The first place Jerdet Summer Music Camp scholarship for Senior High students was awarded to Maria Silva, from Albert Lea, for flute, and the second place was awarded to Jacob Kunkel, from Albert Lea, for percussion. A Jerdet College Scholarship was awarded to Carolyn Schmitz from Wells, a theater arts major with an emphasis in music theater.
There was one Helen Wipplinger Organ Scholarship awarded this year to Amber Klein, from Wells. Helen Wipplinger Piano Scholarships were awarded to Emma Behling and Grace Chalmers from Albert Lea, and Claire Bias, Hannah Goemann, and Lauren Wetzel from Wells. Each year students from the Albert Lea area audition for scholarships to further their musical education through summer music camps and private lessons. Albert Lea Civic Music is pleased that this on-going program benefits many young students in their striving to become better musicians. Each student auditions before a panel of three judges, preparing selections and sight reading. Many of the students from past years have continued their musical studies in college and several have chosen a career in music. Auditions are held in the late spring. Notices are sent to each school available to participate in the auditions and local piano and organ teachers. If you are interested in the program or have questions, please contact Albert Lea Civic Music.
