USC/AC girls and boys excel at Gopher Indoor

The girls&8217; and boys&8217; track and field teams for United South Central/Alden-Conger showed impressive depth Friday at the Gopher Conference Indoor meet at Minnesota State University in Mankato.
Depth in the hurdles, and good overall balance were the keys for the girls as they took three places in each hurdle event, and placed in every event they entered to eke out a close team win over runner-up Mankato Loyola.
Andrea Allis led the Rebels, with first place finishes in the triple jump and both hurdles events. Sarah Schultz chipped in a first place finish in the shot put and Sabrina Bushlack won the high jump to account for five first place finishes for USC/AC.
Breanna Wegner, Brianna Gormley, Hannah Goemann, Amber Johnson and Mary Erin Mueller all placed in at least two individual events each to help the Rebel cause.
&8220;We were missing a few people out of the lineup,&8221; said coach Kent Viesselman, &8220;and that made the girls performance all the more satisfying. When we get everyone here and healthy, and shore up a few of the weaker spots in the lineup, I think we&8217;ll be a pretty good team.&8221;
The boys placed at least two entries in 10 of the 13 individual events and won three of the four relay events to roll to a convincing win in their competition. Paul Little was a double winner for USC/AC, winning both the hurdle events in convincing fashion, and running a strong leg on the winning 4-by-400 team. Bryan Hauge finished first in the high jump as did Tyler Allis in the pole vault. Both posted personal record performances in those events.
Jacob Elmer chipped in a win in the triple jump, and had impressive performances in both the 200 and 400 meter dashes. Jordan Haroldson and Riley Swearingen went 1-2 in the 800, and Tommi Formella and Pete Trio took the top two places in the 3,200-meter run. The 4-by-800 team of Tom Allis, Jay Staloch, Nick Wach and Riley Swearingen came from behind to win their event.
Riley Stenzel, Justin Melby, Jordan Haroldson, and Cole Ramsley took the 4 by 200, and Matt Wood, Jordan Haroldson, Little and Jacob Elmer put the frosting on the cake with a win in the 4 by 400.
On Thursday, the Rebels host the Rebel Relays. Starting time is 4:30 p.m. Teams expected to compete are: Austin, Albert Lea, St. James, St. Peter, NRHEG, JWP and USC/AC. &8220;This meet is a little different from the normal track meet,&8221; said Viesselman. &8220;There are no individual events as such. Everything is either a relay (with a baton) or is scored as a relay, with each team&8217;s top three performances added together to arrive at a team (relay) performance.&8221;
Relay events include: 4 by 100, 4 by 200, 4 by 400, 4 by 800, sprint medley (200-200-400-800), and the distance medley (400-800-1200-1600). Team events include: shot put, discus, triple jump, long jump, high jump, pole vault, high hurdles, 300 hurdles, and 1,600-meter run.
